All the Young Men

February 4, 2021

If you’re feeling in need of inspiration right now, look no further.

Ruth Coker Burks was a young single mother in 1980’s Hot Springs who stumbled into AIDS activism by accident. From a single experience (I don’t want to give it away), she went on to arrange cremations with unwilling funeral directors, covertly bury people in her family cemetery, fill out paperwork for housing assistance, dumpster dive at local grocery stores to make meals to deliver, intercede with medical staff and families when needed, and give out safe sex information at drag shows.

The most amazing thing about this book to me was its portrayal of the nuts and bolts of activism and friendship. Do you see people around you who need help? Here is how you help them and become close friends in the process.
