Enjoy Nashville Reads at Home with Yuyi Morales!

April 14, 2020

During these times of sheltering at home, patrons and staff alike are missing regular in-person library programming. Here at NPL in 2020, we also had to postpone special in-person library events for the year's Nashville Reads title, Dreamers by Yuyi Morales. While that is sad, the good news is that you can still enjoy books and activities inspired by the marvelous Yuyi Morales's works while you're at home!

Several of Morales's books are available from our collection in digital formats, including eBook, downloadable audiobook, and even streaming video! Dreamers is available (in English and Spanish), as well as Niño Wrestles the World and Viva Frida. When sharing ebooks with your child, be sure to share the text with your child, and refrain from dictating how they use the device.

Via her Facebook page, Morales has shared an entire packet of activities based on Dreamers. Activities include instructions on how to make your own book, paper flowers from tissue paper, and a game of bilingual Lotería!

On her website she has shared activities based on some of her other books, including downloadable paper masks based on the luchadores from Niño Wrestles the World, and a paper doll of the protagonist of her book Little Night, complete with different outfits.

Let these resources Yuyi Morales has shared be a jumping off point. What other books can you base your own masks and paper dolls sets on? Can you create your own Lotería game? Maybe you can write and illustrate your own book, just like Yuyi!

*Update 4/23/2020: If you are looking for more Yuyi Morales content, check out this video she shared to her social media channels! Yuyi made this video especially for kids who may be a little sad being cooped up at home.  In Spanish with available English subtitles (be sure to click on the CC, or Closed Captioning, button) this  is an absolute treat!
