Summer's Not the Same Without a Book, Part II

July 24, 2019

This summer, some of NPL's awesome bloggers shared reading recommendations for the season for NPL's Unbound magazine. Here's round two! Be on the lookout for the final round in August.

Warning: These Reads Are Addictive

Come on backstage...

Laurie is reading: Daisy Jones & The Six, by Taylor Jenkins Reid

If you spent hours devouring album cover illustrations and liner notes, then you are going to love Daisy Jones. The interview format of Daisy Jones & The Six is addictive (the stay-up-all-night, driven-by-a-large-espresso-consumed-too-late-in-the-afternoon kind of addictive). Fledgling rock band The Six is on the edge of stardom when Daisy Jones steps up to the microphone and creates harmonies with lead singer Billy. The seductive and static energy between band members will keep you transfixed.

Laurie works in the Collection Development Department. She selects adult music, movies, and nonfiction titles for Nashville Public Library. Born in Brooklyn and raised in East Tennessee, Laurie has lived in Nashville for 15 years.

Frosty, delicious concoctions

Beth is reading: Batch Cocktails, by Maggie Hoffman, and Dry: Delicious Handcrafted Cocktails and Other Clever Concoctions, by Clare Liardet

Summer is a great time for outdoor cocktails with friends, whether you’re a drinker or a non-drinker. For the former, we have Batch Cocktails, a new collection of 65 easy pitcher drinks that can be made ahead of time. For the latter, there’s Dry: Delicious Handcrafted Cocktails, which offers refreshing non-alcoholic drink recipes such as the Paloma Fizz, Watermelon Mary, and Rhubarb Spritz. Both have lovely photographs for inspiration, as well. Cheers!

Beth works in the Collection Development Department. She loves short stories, memoirs, documentary films, and cookbooks. Her favorite things about working at the library are the Salon@615 series and the easy access to her library holds.

We bring best-selling authors to Nashville for free book talks and signings. See who's coming next at salonat615.org.

This book is better than binge-watching

Amanda is reading: The Book of Essie, by Megan MacLean Weir

The basis of this book is a family reality TV show–along the lines of 19 Kids and Counting or Kate + 8–of which I’ve never been a big fan. Esther Ann Hicks is the youngest family member on Six for Hicks. Her daddy is a pastor, and her mama does everything she can to hide/fix the fact that Essie is pregnant. I wasn’t expecting much until the book started taking some unexpected twists. I enjoyed it so much that I finished it the same day I started.

Amanda is a classically trained pianist who loves to read. Like any good librarian, she also has two cats named after Italian cities. Amanda spends her free time sitting in Nashville traffic, baking, and running the Interlibrary Loan office at Nashville Public Library.

NPL offers Interlibrary Loan. What is that? We're so glad you asked! If we don't own a copy of the book you're looking for, we can borrow it for you from another library. Learn more at library.nashville.org/interlibraryloan.
