Female Marvel Comic Leads You'll Want to Read

December 6, 2017

Even if you don't consider yourself a comic book fan, these female leads are definitely worth a read.

As Fandom Fest approaches, it's time to get familiar with some of Marvel's strongest women superheroes.

Squirrel Girl

Doreen Green is part squirrel, part girl, and all heart. As a computer science major at her college, Doreen spends a lot of time trying to balance school work and saving the world. She's incredibly smart and funny, and readers will walk away having learned something new (Squirrel Girl teaches you how to count up to 32 using just one hand!) Although she's considered one of the strongest Marvel superheroes, Doreen's real strength lies in her ability to openly communicate and work out problems. It just goes to show that sometimes the key to taking down the bad guys is just talking things through.

Thor

When Odinson is deemed unworthy, he can no longer wield Molinjar (the iconic hammer.) Enter a new Thor: she's strong, confident, and uses her powers like no other Thor before her. She takes her job seriously, too. Being Thor, even though it looks like fun, is a responsiblity and a duty. There must always be a Thor to protect Midgard, and this Thor says, "Yes, I will hold the hammer." She is a mighty Thor indeed.

Ms. Marvel

"Being someone else isn't liberating. It's exhausting." This is what Kamala Khan tells us once she gets her amazing powers that allow her to stretch and change, just like her idol Carol Danvers, aka Ms. Marvel. What's more amazing is how Kamala can change and shift, but still be Kamala at heart. She's a master at having multiple indentities and balancing her lives. Yes, she can be both Pakistani and American. Yes, she can save the world and still keep her identity secret. And yes, she can make mistakes and struggle to figure out what's best. Never has a superhero felt more relatable.
